IDrive Review

Introduction
Sometime between first century BC and the seventh century AD the great library of Alexandria, a massive collection of all of the world’s knowledge, was destroyed by a series of fantastic fires. This resulted in nearly a total loss of the valuable archives. Unfortunately, rather than being remembered for the vast amounts of lost knowledge, the legacy of the Library has become more about its destruction.

This would never have happened if cloud computing was around in those days. Today, every important piece of data can be safely and securely stored by providers such as IDrive. IDrive is a leader in the online file storage industry, providing low-cost online backup solutions with the consumer in mind, but also with enterprise class features.

IDrive takes the typical backup service and kicks it up a level with expanded features such as file sharing between IDrive users, and serious archiving – they keep up to 30 versions of archived files.

Features of IDrive
IDrive uses a remarkably simple interface. Anyone familiar with Microsoft Windows Explorer or Mac OS finder will find this system very similar to navigate. The Explorer window gives you a virtual view of everything in your account, allowing you to edit and organize with ease.

Pros:

Several Plans to Choose From
IDrive offers a free membership plan that includes 5 GB of storage and most of the features of the paid plans, plus three pro plans. You don’t need a credit card to sign up for the free plan.

Free Plan

  • 5 GB of storage
  • Limited web-based administration and basic customer service

Personal Plan

  • 150 GB for $4.95 per month or $49.50 per year.
  • Limited web-based administration and good customer support.

Pro Family Plan

  • 500 GB for $14.95 per month or $149.50 per year.
  • Backup multiple computers.
  • Limited web-based administration and good customer support.

Business Plan

  • Starting at 100 GB for $9.95 per month or $99.50 per year.
  • Backup any number of computers.
  • Full web-based administration and the best customer support – business customers are given priority customer support.

IDrive offers an unlimited storage option for $49.50 per year, but currently it is only available for PCs using Windows. There are some limitations:

  • No limits are imposed up to 150 GB of backup, but once you reach 150 GB, your bandwidth will be throttled down to 200 Kb/sec for anything above the 150 GB limit.
  • No mapped drive support.
  • No secondary backup.
  • Any data deleted from your personal computer will be deleted from your IDrive account after 30 days
  • Once you sign up for an unlimited plan, you can not downgrade to a Basic or Pro plan.

Private Encryption Key
During installation, you have a choice of a system generated encryption key, or you can create your own private key. Creating your own key is recommended. Private keys are not stored in the system, so not even IDrive personnel are able to access your private files. This keeps your data safe and secure, but if you ever forget or lose your key, you will not be able to recover your data.

Drag and Drop
The drag and drop option makes restoring files easier, but that is all it is capable of – just restoring files. It also only works in the IDrive Explorer interface, not in the classic interface or the web client. However, this is still a unique feature very few other online storage companies offer.

No Worry About a Loss of Connection
With most providers, or even most programs for that matter, if you get disconnected from the internet, downloading stops. Not with IDrive. IDrive won’t send you a warning if your connection has been interrupted, it simply picks up right where it left off when a connection is re-established. Partial transfers, large files, whatever the system was backing up when the interruption occurred is resumed at the precise point at which it left off. This saves valuable time because the back up doesn’t have to start over from the beginning.

Cons:

Overage Charges
Nobody likes surprises on their bill. You sign up for a set amount per month, and that is what you expect to pay. But, you have to keep an eye on your usage. IDrive will charge about 50 cents per month for every GB you use beyond the allotted quota for your plan. That doesn’t sound like much, but if you continually go over, you would be better off upgrading your plan.

Incompatibility
Mac and Windows are not compatible. If you use both Mac and Windows, each system will need its own IDrive account.

The Bottom Line:
IDrive offers a great, low cost online backup solution for individuals and small businesses. There is a complete FAQ section that answers all of your questions to help you decide if they are right for you. If you still aren’t convinced, take the free 5 GB plan for a test drive.
