Mozy Review

If I were asked what my most valuable possession is, I would not hesitate to say my laptop, among other things. Millions of people rely on their laptops to get their work and school papers done. These gadgets are where we keep our files and documents. As such, we need to do our own part in ensuring that these files always remain protected. An online storage and backup company like Mozy helps you store your files online so that you can access them if anything goes wrong. These companies have the functionality of an external hard drive minus the tangible device. There are many benefits to having your files stored remotely via an online service. These are outlined below.

Founded in 2005, the Mozy service has experienced multiple system upgrades to keep up with other enterprise-focused competitors over the years. Mozy is managed by Decho Corporation, which is a subsidiary of a Fortune 500 company. The next section will explain their system’s architecture in detail.

Features of Mozy

Free MozyFree Home User Plan with 2GB space
Mozy offers home users a free plan and 2GB of space. There are no time restrictions – customers can use the free plan for as long as they need to. This is ideal for giving Mozy a free trial before opting for a paid plan such as MozyHome or MozyPro.

MAC Versions Available
Mozy provides complete services for users of MAC operating systems.

Mozy stores versions of your file updates within 30 days. This allows you to recover files that you may have overwritten. The section below is dedicated to explaining the convenient ways Mozy users can access files.

File Access
With only two types of packages, Mozy makes it easy for you to figure out which suits you best. Keeping up with other companies, Mozy offers automated backups, which can be configured personally. You decide whether your backups are automatic or scheduled. Arranging a schedule allows the user to back up files at a time that is least disruptive to them. The file updates are incremental and performed only on files that have been changed.

File transfer is flexible, as it can still be paused or resumed. The service can provide support for open and locked files such as Outlook email messages and contacts.

Mozy works through an executable file that should be installed in the system. You can then run the system to choose the files and folders you want to be backed up. Mozy will back up both Outlook and open files with one application: 2xProtect. They also offer local and online backup support. The way it works is that the program dashboard will contain the total size of files you have used on your account. Mozy will continue to backup files and corresponding changes on them until the limit is reached.

A unique service of Mozy is their provision allowing for local backups. You can provide your own USB or Firewire drive, as long as they are using either NTFS or FAT32 file systems. The local backup process happens simultaneously with the online backup saving your precious time. Be warned though that local backup with Mozy has limitations. For one, the files stored in the drive are not encrypted and can be readily accessed by anyone. It also can’t be used with shared network drives and deep path files.

Sync Files Across Multiple Devices
A new feature of Mozy is the ability to link to files across various devices such as PC/laptop, mobile appliances and tablets. This is possible due to the Mozy Stash. Files that are placed within your stash folder can be accessed by various browsers.

The data entrusted to Mozy is kept secure by a series of military grade measures. The advanced package called MozyPro allows users to select their preferred encryption method. You can take advantage of either the company managed 448-bit Blowfish encryption key or the private 256-bit AES encryption. The files are transferred using a secure SSL connection to reach the Mozy data centre, which has 24/7 security, fire detection and control systems.

Mobile Access
Mozy knows how important it is to access files when you’re on the go. Seeing that this is the case for most of their customers, they have devised ways to support as many platforms as possible. MozyPro has a feature that allows mobile access from any IOS (iPod touch, iPad, iPhone) or Android gadget. A mobile application replaces the desktop application used on laptops and computers. This can give you access over the backup files which you can view, edit and forward as an email.

Customer Support
They say that if it looks too good then it must not be true. Despite the handy and powerful features of Mozy Home and Mozy Pro, it is worth taking note that customer support stays at par.
Mozy has a support portal with live chat support technicians tasked to provide real time assistance. MozyPro can resolve their files faster through phone support. A huge number of self-help articles explaining how the Mozy system works can be viewed online. These articles can be read along with the video tutorials for more effective education.

Mozy can be slow compared to some other service providers.

Customer Support
Customer Support is problematic at certain times.

My friends told me I should try Mozy. I’m a student, so I can’t afford to spend a small fortune for online storage solutions, no matter how badly I need the space. Luckily, Mozy offers a free plan that is perfect for my needs. I get all of the space I need, for free! Of course the paid plans have more fancy features, but I am perfectly happy with what I get.

I have read some reviews of customers needing more than 50 GB. I have to wonder what in the world they need so much space for? I find that 50 GB is plenty and when you consider all of the other great features Mozy offers, why would you want to go anywhere else? I certainly would not trust anyone else with my sensitive data.

The name Mozy might imply a laid back, relaxed company, which may accurately describe the company. But they certainly are not laid back when it comes to providing high security and a slew of features you need to take the stress out of online backups. What I like most is that the data is completely hacker proof and safe from internal corruption! They use some of the highest-grade encryption programs ever invented and these programs are continually running to keep my data safe at all times.

I run a business from my home office, so I know how devastating it would be to lose even a small portion of my files. My friend told me about online storage. I was skeptical at first – how reliable can cloud storage be? Well, let me tell you, Mozy is as secure as if I stored my files under my pillow – maybe even more so. The program works very well, is easy to use and quick. Which is important to me, because I don’t have a lot time to try learning complicated applications, or spending hours backing up my files on external hard drives. I am so glad I gave online storage a try. I am not one bit skeptical anymore!

While 50 GB of storage space for 4.99 is a pretty good deal and might be enough for some, I find I need more space. I filled my 50 GB in no time. However, the company is great and I am very happy with the service, so I have decided to upgrade instead of going with a different provider. After all, paying for more space is a lot better than paying for an inferior service.

Mozy doesn’t have a money back guarantee – and the reason for this is very simple – they don’t need one. When you offer a solid product for a great price, no one will ask for their money back. Companies that need to lure in customers will offer all sorts of incentives. With Mozy, all they need is to just be themselves. A great product speaks for itself and many happy customers (like me) make sure the word is spread far and wide.

Mozy provides the ideal online back up solution. The program is easy to use and the highest possible encryption is used to keep all of my files safe and private. Not even Mozy employees with curious eyes can peek at my private data. You might not think this is a big deal because the employes are supposed to be trustworthy. Well hospital workers in California are supposed to be trustworthy, too and how many times have heard about them leaking medical information about celebrity patients? It only takes a little bit of info to ruin your life or your business. I might not be a famous celebrity, but I have worked hard to build up my business and I don’t need anyone coming in and wiping me out, all because of a small leak in security. Nope, for my money, I’ll stick with a company I can trust.
