Storegate is an online storage service provider that makes it easy, efficient, and secure for you to store, access, share and protect all types of digital information that you have in your computer, mobile phone or digital camera.
StoreGate is a bit on the pricey side compared to other online storage service providers. They also like to squeeze customers with all sorts of additional fees and charges. For example, backing up your phone data costs an extra $1.49 per month. That might not sound too expensive, but it could be a deal breaker for many potential customers.
StoreGate offers customers:
- 1 GB of free storage space – no credit card required.
- 25 GB for $6.95 per month or $79.99/year
- 50 GB for $14.99 per month.
- 100 GB for $29.99 per month.
- There are also business plans for custom pricing, and all plans come with a 30 day free trial with no credit card required.
The free account is very basic. This plan allows you to backup and share files, but files aren’t backed up automatically and you can’t schedule backups, and you don’t get SSL encryption or tech support. So, if you just want to share some photos or files, or have easy access to your files from anywhere , this plan may suit your needs just fine.
Features of StoreGate
Easy to Use
Nobody wants online storage programs to be complicated or difficult to operate and this is one area where StoreGate scores well. The interface is neat and clean, and comes with a cool color scheme that is very easy on the eyes. The intuitive layout is simple enough for even the most novice user to navigate with ease.
With the free account, you simply resister, log in and begin backing up your files. For the paid plans, you need to download the StoreGate AutoStore software client, which installs quickly and smoothly.
StoreGate protects files during transit with 128-bit SSL encryption and uses a special security platform they developed themselves to keep files secure on their own servers. In addition to this, https-encrypted login authorization is used, which means that both username and the password are encrypted to prevent any unauthorized viewing.
Data can be accessed with any device able to connect to the internet including computers, laptops, smartphones, iPad, iPhone, Android devices and tablets. The web interface allows users to view files, download, share, organize and manage their account.
The only customer support offered is an FAQ section – although this section is quite detailed – and email support tickets. There is no live chat help or phone support. The service is very easy to use, but it would still be nice to know tech support and customer service is there if you need help.
No Real Time Backup
The initial backup might be a bit complicated for some users. Unlike most online storage providers, StoreGate does not automatically select the most commonly used files and folders. Instead, you are presented with a Windows Explorer-style view of your local hard drive with check boxes. You check off the files you want backed up and select “start backup.”
The files you select for the initial backup will become your standard backup set. The same data will be backed up according to the daily schedule, which you will have set up during the installation process. This means that any changes you make after the daily backup will not be backed up until the next scheduled backup and any new files may not be included in the backup set. So you have to make very sure you know what is and what is not backed up or you could lose some very valuable data. You also don’t get any type of verification as to whether or not files were successfully backed up.
Versioning has become an important feature with online backup services because all too often current files become lost or damaged before they can be saved or backed up. In other cases, files are accidentally deleted or overwritten. Without being able to access older versions, valuable data could be lost.
Considering the huge number of other online storage service providers that offer packages jam packed with super cool features for less money, StoreGate doesn’t seem very competitive or very attractive. Basically, the company does not offer anything to justify the higher prices. The free account is only 1 GB, there is no phone support or live chat help, even for paying customers, and you really have to keep on eye on what is getting backed up to make sure nothing is lost. But, you have nothing to lose by trying a free 30 day trial or signing up for a 1 GB free account. You may find StoreGate is the perfect online storage provider for your needs.
